About Scream Queers

Scream Queers is a monthly horror book club at Under the Umbrella on the third Saturday at 1 p.m. Due to the graphic nature of some of the books read by the group, it is an 18+ book club but it otherwise open to all.

Please consider bringing a contribution (sliding scale $1-5) for the meeting room reservation at Under the Umbrella. If $1 a month is a barrier for you, you are still welcome to attend!

COVID Precautions: It is a requirement for both the bookstore and the book club to wear a mask.

About the Book

Gideon the Ninth meets Annihilation when an LGBTQ+ Youth Center battles a fundamentalist Doomsday cult in a post-apocalyptic world. Seventeen-year-old trans boy Benji is on the run from the cult who raised him—the fundamentalist group that unleashed Armageddon and destroyed half of the world’s population. Cornered by the monsters born from the destruction, Benji is rescued by a group of teens from a local LGBTQ+ Youth Center who’ve banded together to make their way in this dangerous new world. But the group’s leader, Nick, knows Benji’s darkest secret: before Benji fled, the cult injected him with bioweapon, designed to mutate him into a monster deadly enough to will eliminate the remaining survivors.  Debut author Andrew Joseph White delivers with an action-packed, thought-provoking story about not just embracing the monster within, but unleashing the monster against your oppressors.

This month there is an optional comparison read: Manhunt by Gretchen Felker-Martin.
