About Scream Queers

Scream Queers is a monthly horror book club at Under the Umbrella on the third Saturday at 1 p.m. Due to the graphic nature of some of the books read by the group, it is an 18+ book club but it otherwise open to all.

Please consider bringing a contribution (sliding scale $1-5) for the meeting room reservation at Under the Umbrella. If $1 a month is a barrier for you, you are still welcome to attend!

Claiming a Free Book

Thanks to a generous donation, we are able to proviede three free copies of the book of the month EACH MONTH! If you are interested in receiving a free copy, fill out this form. We are prioritizing BIPOC, disabled, and trans readers for these free copies. You may apply for free books each month, but we will prioritize new individuals.

COVID Precautions: It is a requirement for both the bookstore and the book club to wear a mask.

About It Came from the Closet

October 4, 2022 Through the lens of horror—from Halloween to Hereditary—queer and trans writers consider the films that deepened, amplified, and illuminated their own experiences.Horror movies hold a complicated space in the hearts of the queer community: historically misogynist, and often homo- and transphobic, the genre has also been inadvertently feminist and open to subversive readings. Common tropes—such as the circumspect and resilient “final girl,” body possession, costumed villains, secret identities, and things that lurk in the closet—spark moments of eerie familiarity and affective connection. Still, viewers often remain tasked with reading themselves into beloved films, seeking out characters and set pieces that speak to, mirror, and parallel the unique ways queerness encounters the world. It Came from the Closet features twenty-five original essays by writers speaking to this relationship, through connections both empowering and oppressive.
