About the Event

Join us for a conversation with award-winning writer Dr. Darcie Little Badger, author of Elatsoe and A Snake Falls to Earth. Dr. Little Badger will be joined in conversation by NDN Girls Book Club founder Kinsale Drake for a candid conversation about the need to reinvent queer narratives, the enduring power of storytelling, and how a new generation of Indigenous writers are reshaping the literary landscape. This event is co-presented with Torrey House Press, with generous support from Utah Humanities.

DARCIE LITTLE BADGER is a Lipan Apache writer with a PhD in oceanography. Her critically acclaimed debut novel, Elatsoe, was featured in Time Magazine as one of the best 100 fantasy books of all time. Elatsoe also won the Locus award for Best First Novel and is a Nebula, Ignyte, and Lodestar finalist. Her second fantasy novel, A Snake Falls to Earth, received a Nebula Award, an Ignyte Award, and a Newbery Honor and is on the National Book Awards longlist. Her third book, Sheine Lende, is the prequel to Elatsoe and will be published in 2024. Darcie is married to a veterinarian named Taran.

KINSALE DRAKE (Diné) is a poet/editor/playwright whose work has appeared in Poetry, Best New Poets, Poets.org, Poetry Northwest, The Slowdown, Black Warrior Review, The Adroit Journal, Poetry Online, Yale Literary Magazine, TIME, NPR, MTV (w/ Shaandiin Tome), and elsewhere. Her debut collection, THE SKY WAS ONCE A DARK BLANKET (University of Georgia Press, 2024), won the 2023 National Poetry Series. Kinsale currently edits Changing Wxman Collective and directs NDN Girls Book Club, which has received grants from NDN Collective and First Peoples Fund. She is the recipient of the 2023 Adroit Prize for Poetry, the Joy Harjo Poetry Award, and was named as the 2023 Aspen Institute Emerging Writer Fellow in Poetry. She has performed at Carnegie Hall twice, with Scholastic in 2018 and 2023. Kinsale has been recognized as a 2022 Yahoo “In The Know” Changemaker, one of The Sunday Paper’s changemakers for Women’s History Month, and one of Time Magazine’s People Changing How We See the World curated by filmmaker Ava Duvernay.
